Five Quick Tips for Retrofitting Your Home To Age in Place

The Center for Disease Control defines Aging in Place as "the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level."

Aging in Place does not have to be incredibly expensive or complicated. Here are five simple tips to help you get started:

  1. Install grab bars in the bathroom: These can aid in sitting and standing in a room where privacy is key.
  2. Relocate your bedroom to the first floor: The best way to deal with stairs is sometimes to avoid them altogether. By sleeping on the first floor, you won’t have to climb or descend stairs early in the morning or late at night.
  3. Get rid of throw rugs: Though they may be attractive, they can cause you to trip and fall. If you cannot dispense with them, investigate special tacks or tape that will make them harder to trip over.
  4. Install a ramp at an entrance to your house: If you are able to install a ramp at an entrance to your home, it can make it that much easier to enter and exit. It does not have to be indiscreet, either. If you can put it in at a side entrance, none of your neighbors may even know you have it.
  5. Alter cabinet and drawer knobs and handles: If you have trouble opening and closing doors and cabinets, look into replacing the knobs and handles with ones that are easier to grab and hold.
